What are the benefits of sleep?
Lack of sleep, especially among college students in America has been a serious problem for a long time. The average American gets less than six (6) hours of sleep a night. Sleep is the body’s natural way of healing and destressing itself. Sleep allows for your body to lower your blood pressure, maintain your weight, and reduce your chances of diabetes. Sleep is also necessary for our brain function and can help to improve your memory.
What is good to help you sleep?
There are a lot of good things to help you sleep in addition to a natural sleep aid. It is beneficial to wake up and go to sleep at the same time each day. It is also recommended that you suppress the amount of caffeine you drink later in the day. Start to eliminate blue light exposure as your bedtime approaches by wearing blue light glasses or utilize apps and features on your cell phone to decrease blue light.
What foods help you sleep or are high in melatonin?
It is often recommended to avoid caffeine, but there are food and drinks that can help you have a good night of sleep. Chamomile tea is often recommended before bed. Foods to consider eating throughout the day to help with a good night sleep include, but are not limited to:
- Almonds – A serving of almonds contains high levels of magnesium and calcium, which help with sleep.
- Fatty Fish – Each variety of fish contains different levels of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. These nutrients help regulate your serotonin levels, which aid with your waking and sleeping cycles.
- Walnuts – Like fatty fish, walnuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids, along with linoleic acid.
- Turkey – The amino acid tryptophan in turkey can help to regulate your body's melatonin, thus helping provide a good night's sleep.
